The Macintosh can be run as a reliable, multi-talking computer if you use applications that have been designed to run in a multitasking environment. The problem is, until now you could not identify those applications that were multi-tasking aware! Status shows you which applications are multi-tasking aware by displaying the remaining free CPU cycles (Sometimes called free "Ticks" or free "Null Events") that are left for other applications to use. Make an Alias to Status and place it in your System's Start Up Items folder to launch this application each time you start up your computer. The bar chart show how active your CPU is doing background tasks. The number of free ticks are sampled for one second once every 10 second. The last free ticks sample is displayed as a number between 0 and 60 just below and to the right of the bar chart.
We have include several small application that demonstrate good and poor background tasking capability. Cray is a 20k desk accessory that samples the image on the right side of the screen and displays it in a magnifialble window. Cray then scrolls down the image in the background. Hyper Magnifier, another 20k DA samples random locations on you screen and displays them in a Magnifiable window. After running Status, you will be able to run as many copies of these applications as you wish. Notice that when running in the background, they still hand back the Free Ticks for the operating system to allocate to other applications.
Now run your own, favorite applications and see how well they do at handing back Null Events to the operating system. If Status indicates any of your application are "CPU HOGS", contact the developer of that application and tell them to clean up their code! Better yet, tell them to download their own copy of Status so that it will inform them immediately when they have solved the problem.
